Did you know that in the 1980s most working professionals would make about 10,000 impressions within few months? Sometimes, depending upon their community size and their work, a professional would make barely 10,000 impressions in a year!
Today if you are on social media for personal, as well as professional, reasons you're making over 10,000 impressions a day!
Impressions are just simply that, an impression of you. It doesn't mean that someone meets you. It doesn't mean they spoke to you. It doesn't even mean that they read your article or your post.
Someone could've been seeing a picture of you in an event program. They could've been passing through your website. Google could have brought your search engine results up. Your photo could have come up on a google search. They could've seen you on YouTube as a suggested video.
All of these are impressions—new and old, online and offline, intended and accidental—all add up to say something about who we are, what we stand for, and what we are about. Intentional or not, your impressions are speaking. Do you know what they are saying? The field of impression management is about understanding the message that all of the impressions you are making are saying both individually and collectively.

The field of impression management is about understanding the message that all of the impressions you are making are saying both individually and collectively.
Impression management is about saying, "Let's look at what we've got out there already and is this saying something?" If someone would look at all the impressions I'm making, does this add up to a story that says who I am, what I'm about, and what I'm doing with my life? If it isn't, let's course correct it. If it is, let's keep going there with intention. How can we refine the message more? So that way it's more powerful to people receiving the message. So that way either it's clear about who we are, it's clear about our goals that we're going after, it's clear about the relationships that we truly want to have with people.
Impression management is about creating clarity.
Impression management on the most personal level is about understanding our instinct and intuition and using our subconscious mind to our advantage and to our audience's advantage on a professional branding level.
Impression management is about making sure that all the impressions that we make, personally, within our brand, within people representing our company, that they all add up to what our brand story and our brand relationship is about.
Because the truth is, is that we don't live in a society anymore where there's business hours and personal hours. It's all hours. It's all impressions. And they all matter.
We don't live in a society anymore where there's business hours and personal hours. It's all hours. It's all impressions. And they all matter.
No one wants 15 minutes of fame. We want a lifetime of influence.
